On The Road

Business travel has often been a place for my sexual addiction to become a problem as it provided an unsupervised, unmonitored space with access to WiFi and media I didn’t normally have access to. This may not be a problem for a single guy or someone that always lives alone, but it is a real challenge for a married guy that hasn’t had to face those issues. We have leaned on our wives or our families to keep us from pursuing lust. That weakness is now exposed as I have an opportunity in front of me and have not been exercising the right choices. Here are some practical questions and recommendations on how to not lose sobriety while on your road trip.

These questions may also be applicable when you are home alone and the family is away.

Is watching adult channels a problem?

  • Call the front desk and block adult titles
  • Avoid possibility surfing – don’t scan channels looking for something racy.
  • Movies rated R and TV shows rated TV 14 and TV MA are off limits.
  • If you must watch TV head towards nature shows, documentaries, or science channels.
  • It might be safest if you just listen to the radio in your room.

Do you have a laptop or tablet with Internet access? Is it protected by accountability software?

  • Yes. Be careful
  • No. Stay off the internet or go downstairs to the lobby or public space.

Do you have any back doors or bypasses? Ways not to get caught?

  • Block yourself. Make it complicated or require multiple steps to get around protections.
  • Don’t make it easy. For example, put your laptop in your bag, zipped up, in the closet.
  • Delete the apps and hide them in iTunes or Google Play.

Are you susceptible to masturbation while in your room or bed alone?

  • Keep your clothes on
  • Keep your hands out of your shorts
  • Don’t sleep naked

Are you tempted to masturbate in the shower?

  • Shower quickly
  • Avoid prolonged soaping and washing of your penis. Bluntly, it should take 3 seconds to wash your penis. Any longer and you are playing games.

Are you struggling a lot?

  • Stay in the company of colleagues as long as possible
  • Call or text a brother. Checkin every night. Ask them to check on you.
  • If it is late, leave a voicemail or send an email
  • Tell them what you are wrestling with and ask them to ask you what you did in the morning. Be specific.
